CANTOS DE MI TIERRACabaret Latino CANTOS DE MI TIERRA will be an evening of songs and rhythms from some of the best performers and composers from Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and beyond. Join us as we explore how these songs have helped us shape our sense of belonging, express our love, process our grief, and celebrate life through the beauty of the Spanish language.Music direction by Armando Fox.THE PERFORMERSEdu Gonzlez-MaldonadoEdu was born and raised in Puerto Rico and moved to the Bay Area for graduate school in 2010. He joined the San Francisco Gay Mens Chorus after discovering his talent for singing at a karaoke bar in Palo Alto. Edu made his theatrical debut last year as a tenor in 42nd Street Moons production of Rodgers and Hammersteins A Grand Night for Singing. This year he will be the lead tenor in the Lamplighters Music Theater production of Ruddygore by Gilbert and Sullivan and the upper tenor, Jinkx, in the revue Forever Plaid by 42nd Street.Jorge MartinezJorge was born in San Francisco but raised and educated in Guadalajara, Mexico. He returned to San Francisco as a young adult and that was when his musical journey began. Singing became a means to stay connected with his beautiful Mexico whenever he longed for home and his roots. He started singing publicly in local venues, private events, and benefits, delighting audiences with his romantic Boleros and Latin tunes on both sides of the border. Laura RamosBorn and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, Laura grew up surrounded by music. Her father was a skilled guitarist and well-connected to the local music scene of the era. Bohemian nights at home were the norm where both her father and mother would sing. It wasnt surprising when Laura became the lead vocalist for well-known music bands in her town of Crdoba.Shane RuizShane was born in Hialeah, Florida to two first-generation Cuban-Americans. He sang in his elementary and middle school choir, but largely abandoned singing as his passion for politics became his primary focus. After moving to San Francisco in 2015, open mics at Martunis provided him an outlet for his love of music. Music helps fuel his continued work in the labor movement where he works to organize unionized healthcare workers. Armando Fox - Music DirectionArmando is a Cuban-American New Yorker living in San Francisco. A classically-trained pianist since age 5, and a pretty bad accordionist and woodwind player, Armando has handled the orchestration for many musical theater productions and has served as Music Director for dozens of Bay Area shows. By day he is an award-winning computer science professor and diversity officer at UC Berkeley.
